  How to Apply

Applications for the program beginning in Autumn 2009 will be accepted now through March 1, 2009 for notification by April 1, 2009 and then on an ongoing basis until June 15, 2009. After that date, applications will be accepted on a space-available basis until the program is filled. International applicants should apply by December 1, 2008.

Please contact us if you are interested in part time study beginning in another quarter.

Before applying, please review the admission requirements.

To apply for the Professional Masters in Computational Linguistics, please follow these steps:

STEP 1:

Complete the Graduate School Application.

Note: This is an online application that includes an application fee. The current cost will be stated on the page.

When asked which degree program you are applying to, select Linguistics with a track in Computational Linguistics. The online application provides instructions on which materials should be uploaded or mailed to Graduate Admissions and the Linguistics Department.

The application will include instructions on how to submit these items online:

  • A one- or two-page Statement of Purpose presenting your objectives as a graduate student as well as any other information you feel would be relevant to your application.
  • Two or three letters of recommendation, preferably from people familiar with your academic work and especially with your work in computer science or linguistics courses. Applicants will be given the opportunity to enter recommenders' e-mail addresses.
  • A sample of your academic work (required for applicants who have completed their previous degree within the past two years. Other applicants who wish to send samples of academic work are encouraged to do so). Types of samples include coding projects (together with write-ups), theses, and term papers.

STEP 2 (International students only):

Send the following materials to:

The Office of Graduate Admissions
200 Gerberding Hall, Box 351245
Seattle, WA 98195-1245
  • International Students Only: One complete set of official transcripts and the UW Statement of Financial Ability form.
  • TOEFL scores. International students must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 580 for the paper-based test and 237 on the computer-based test to be admitted to the Graduate School without the necessity of taking English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. International students who are currently studying in this or another English-speaking country, and who anticipate a degree from their current studies, are not required to take the TOEFL. Note: Faculty may require remedial courses in English of non-native speakers above and beyond the requirement of the graduate school, especially if granted a teaching assistantship.

STEP 3:

Send the following materials to:

University of Washington
Department of Linguistics
Box 354340
Seattle WA 98195-4340
