How to Apply
Applications for the program beginning in autumn 2008 will be accepted now through March 3, 2008 for notification by April 1, 2008 and then on an ongoing basis until June 15, 2008. After that date, applications will be accepted on a space-available basis until the program is filled. International applicants should apply by December 1, 2007.
Please contact us if you are interested in part time study beginning in another quarter.
Before applying, please review the admission requirements.
To apply for the Professional Masters in Computational Linguistics, please follow these steps:
STEP 1:
Complete the Graduate School Application.
(Note: This is an online application that includes an application fee. The current cost will be stated on the page. When asked which degree program you are applying to, select Linguistics with a track in Computational Linguistics. The online application provides instructions on materials to be mailed to Graduate Admissions and the Linguistics Department.)
STEP 2:
Send the following materials to:
The Office of Graduate Admissions
200 Gerberding Hall, Box 351245
Seattle, WA 98195-1245
- International Students Only: One complete set of official transcripts and the UW Statement of Financial Ability form.
- GRE scores. GRE scores from within the past three years are required of all students (Computer Science subject GRE is not required). For native speakers a score of 600 is expected on both the verbal and quantitative sections. Scores can be outweighed by other factors, however, especially for non-native speakers.
- TOEFL scores. International students must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 580 for the paper-based test and 237 on the computer-based test to be admitted to the Graduate School without the necessity of taking English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. International students who are currently studying in this or another English-speaking country, and who anticipate a degree from their current studies, are not required to take the TOEFL. Note: Faculty may require remedial courses in English of non-native speakers above and beyond the requirement of the graduate school, especially if granted a teaching assistantship.
If you did not apply online ("Step 1" above), you will also need to mail these materials to the address above:
- The Graduate School Application Form (original).
- Application Fee ($50).
STEP 3:
Send the following materials to:
University of Washington
Department of Linguistics
Box 354340
Seattle WA 98195-4340
- The Graduate School Application Form (copy).
- A one- or two-page Statement of Purpose presenting your objectives as a graduate student as well as any other information you feel would be relevant to your application.
- Two or three letters of recommendation, preferably from people familiar with your academic work and especially with your work in computer science or linguistics courses. (There is no recommendation form supplied by the University or department.)
- A sample of your academic work (required for applicants who have completed their previous degree within the past two years. Other applicants who wish to send samples of academic work are encouraged to do so).
- One complete set of official transcripts. (Note that international applicants send an additional set of transcripts to Graduate Admissions.)
