Admission Requirements
|
Applications for the program beginning in Autumn 2010 will be accepted now through March 1, 2010 for notification by April 1, 2010 and then on an ongoing basis until June 15, 2010. After that date, applications will be accepted on a space-available basis until the program is filled. International applicants should apply by December 1, 2009.

While courses in the program will provide plenty of opportunities for computer programming experience, the degree does not focus on programming instruction. Students with a background in linguistics are particularly encouraged to apply, but applicants must also have computer science experience.
Admission requirements include:
- The ability to program, including:
- Knowledge of data structures and algorithms (equivalent to CS 373 at UW)*
- Broad familiarity with C++ and Java
- Expertise in C++ or Java
- Perl and/or Python are recommended
- A college-level introductory course in linguistics or equivalent
- Introduction to statistics and probability (equivalent to STAT 391 at UW)*
- Some knowledge of languages other than English is strongly encouraged
- International applicants must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 580 for the paper-based test and 237 on the computer-based test to be admitted to the Graduate School without the necessity of taking English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. International students who are currently studying in this or another English-speaking country, and who anticipate a degree from their current studies, are not required to take the TOEFL.
Students coming from a primarily Linguistics or languages background are eligible to enroll in the program under a two-year schedule. In the first year, students complete the linguistics requirements along with prerequisite courses in Computer Science and Statistics. This prepares students for the Computational Linguistics core sequence in Year 2. Students applying with this path in mind must still submit evidence of aptitude for Computer Science. Taking at least one to two computer programming courses before applying is advised.
All students must either pass a placement exam or take the summer quarter fundamentals refresher course before enrolling in the Computational Linguistics core sequence. The placement exam will be available to take online as soon as students are admitted. The summer refresher course can be taken online or in person at UW. It will cover key concepts from probability and statistics, formal grammars and formal languages, finite-state automata and transducers, algorithms and data structures, and UNIX and server cluster usage.
Students taking the program over two years with the Computational Linguistics core sequence in Year 2 can postpone the placement exam and summer course until the end of Year 1.

* Applicants who have not taken data structures and algorithms or statistics and probability may complete one of these courses in the first quarter of the program by taking CS 326 or STATS 391 at the UW. This option will be subject to the availability of appropriate courses.
